Apple is currently developing a kind of tool that would be capable of scanning your device for images that contain child sex abuse material along with child pornography.
According to numerous reports, the new tool will be announced soon and would be implemented on the client side, which means that it will be in your device.
Matthew Daniel Green, a cybersecurity expert who works as an Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins Information Security Institute in the USA, tweeted the news.
They said in a tweet that Apple’s plans to launch the client-side system to detect child abuse images from Apple devices. Green also noted that the tool will be a key ingredient in adding surveillance to encrypted messaging systems along with catching abusers.
They added:
The way Apple is doing this launch, they’re going to start with non-E2E [non-end-to-end] photos that people have already shared with the cloud. So it doesn’t ‘hurt’ anyone’s privacy. But you have to ask why anyone would develop a system like this if scanning E2E photos wasn’t the goal.
The way this app works is still a mystery, however, many experts believe that Apple will be using the app to raise concerns against users who might have child abuse content on their devices.
An official statement from Apple regarding this is also being awaited.
