Why Is Your Laptop Overheating – 7 Possible Reasons On Why Your Laptop Easily Heats Up Despite Light Usage

Living in this tech world has a lot of ups and downs, considering that everything is constantly evolving and we need to have more powerful technological devices that can handle them.

One of the most common tech gadgets that are found in every household are laptops, especially in houses where office workers and students are present, but the problem with them is that almost every single person that owns one has a problem with hot temperatures.

As the laptop becomes older, it has to work harder to deal with the things that you need to work on, which also causes CPU and GPU temperatures to rise up, but that’s not the only reason.

If your laptop is overheating, there could be many possible reasons behind that and to help you find what’s causing your laptop to overheat, we are going to list down some reasons on why laptop is overheating.

7 Possible Reasons On Why Your Laptop Easily Heats Up Despite Light Usage

1. You are using heavy applications

One of the most common reasons on why your laptop easily heats up despite light usage is you are running applications that are not that easy to handle. This problem comes up if you have a laptop that is old and has very little RAM.

If you want to download an application on your laptop, you want to check out the system requirements that it has and make sure that your laptop has those specs. Then check out how much RAM it takes once you are using it. If it takes very little RAM, you can let it run in the background, but if it takes a lot, you can exit.

2. Your fans are not clean

Another reason could be that your fans are not clean anymore and there are a lot of dust build-up in your laptop’s fans. This itself can be causing the really high temperatures that you are facing when you are using your laptop for light work or heavy work.

Remember, this is gonna be a problem if you have never cleaned the fans of your laptop and have been using it for at least 2 to 3 years.

If you have never cleaned the fans of your laptop, you want to bring the device to a professional or the service centre of your laptop company and get it cleaned. If you are an experienced person and have cleaned fans before, you can do this on your own, but if you have never done it, you want to go to a professional.

3. You need to change the thermal paste

Another possible reason could be an old thermal paste. Yep, if you have owned that laptop for at least 2 to 3 years, try to bring that device to a experienced laptop repair services provider and try to get its thermal paste and fans clean. Doing this will help you out a lot in getting better CPU and GPU temperatures.

4. You need more RAM

Another possible reason on why your laptop is heating up is because there is too much pressure on the CPU, which could happen when you are running multiple apps at the same time despite having very little RAM.

In the modern time, you need to have at least 16GB of RAM if you want to run all apps on your laptop with ease. If you do not have 16GB of RAM in your laptop right now, try to get that, especially if you love to open multiple tabs on Google Chrome, listen to music, and watch high-quality content on the internet.

5. Faulty CPU heatsink or fan

If your laptop is new and you are facing heating issues right away, this can indicate a problem in the heatsink. Yep, there are some chances that you might have received a laptop that has a faulty CPU heatsink or fan. The fix for this one is to return the laptop or bring it to the nearest service centre of the company and get it checked out. If they say there is a problem in the heatsink or the fan, they can give you a laptop replacement or can even change the component for you.

6. Bad airflow and no proper elevation

Another reason could be bad airflow. Yep, if your laptop is not elevated properly and has bad airflow there are some high chances that you yourself are causing the problem.

Try to put a book under your laptop, make sure they’re not covering the fans, and try to elevate them from the ground in a slant way. The fans should be at least 3 inches up from the ground. Try to turn on your Cpu and GPU temperature checker and see if you are getting any difference.

On max, you can get at least 5 to 10 degrees better temps if your laptop has good airflow and proper elevation.

7. Bad room temperature

If you are using your laptop in a room that has bad temperatures, that could be the main cause too! Your laptop’s fans are going to take in air that’s around it, so if it is cold, the laptop will get cold air, but if it’s hot, you know what’s going to happen.

In order to fix this problem, you want to go in a room that has good air temperatures, hence go to a room that has an Air Conditioner. Doing this will do you a lot in the process of decreasing the temperatures of your laptop.

To get the best results, elevate your laptop, clean its fans, replace its thermal paste, and use it in a room that has good temperature.
